We waited in front of the command building out on the street.
Romey said, âThe agents who are here are British.â
âBritish?â
âYou know, like crumpets and James Bond?â
âTheyâre a part of Her Majestyâs Secret Service?â
âOr whatever. They got the accents.â
Widow said, âSounds like MI6.â
âWho?â
Widow said, âEnglandâs Secret Intelligence Service. Itâs like their version of the CIA. How many guys?â
âJust two guys.â
âSo, what are they here for?â
Romey looked around the street. She looked in the direction of both checkpoints like she was checking her guys. Then she said, âYou can ask them yourself when we head back to the station. I think theyâre still there.â
Just then, we saw Kelly pull up outside the checkpoint to the south, as he had before when he picked me up. A police van followed behind him. I hadnât seen it before. They all passed the guards and rolled up to us. The van pulled around and off to the sidewalk and parked.
Four people got out. Two of them were women. All four of them were young. They looked like they were in their twenties.
Romey walked over to Kellyâs window and said, âDonât get out.â
He didnât.
She said, âWe got some new info.â
âWhat?â
âA video. From Turik.â
âA confession?â
âNo.â
âWhat is it?â
âIâll show it to you later. But it looks like Turik is innocent.â
Kelly said, âWhat? How?â
âIt looks like he mightâve been coerced. Or at the very least, he had an accomplice.â
âWhat do you want me to do?â
âStay here with the team. Make sure they go over Colonel Warrenâs office.â
She went on to explain to him the situation and my theory of what happened.
I stepped toward her car and looked at the checkpoints again. Some of the MPs stared back at me. I made eye contact with one of them. He looked me over suspiciously and then returned to talking to one of the other MPs.
I saw the forensic team go to the back of the van and pull out a bunch of gear. They wore protective eye goggles and plastic gloves.
I looked down at mine and pulled them off, stuffed them into my pocket.
Romey came over and said, âLetâs go.â
We got into the car, and she backed up, headed back toward the same checkpoint that we had gone through earlier. She said, âWhere to first?â
I said, âGot Warrenâs home address?â
âOf course. Itâs on the computer.â
âWeâd better head over there.â
âNo reason to call South Korea then?â
âYou can have one of your guys call to see if there ever were orders, but I doubt it.â
Romey headed toward the gate.
I said, âHow are you going to get past the media?â
She said, âDonât worry about that.â
And she smiled.
